Compost Regulations for Vendors

VegFest is striving to make the 2024 NEVF as zero waste as possible. Please carefully read over our vendor regulations below, and if you have questions, contact jen@vegfest.org

All NEVF vendors are required to use BPI-certified compostable materials for sampling and serving food. This includes plates, to-go containers, utensils, napkins, cups, straws, sampling cups, and all other disposables.

Be sure that your materials have BPI-certification. BPI does rigorous testing to make sure items are truly compostable and will not leave harmful chemicals in the compost we use to grow food. Currently there are no wider regulations, so any company can claim to be compostable, which is why you should always look for third party certification. Learn more at BPI World.

Additional Zero Waste Suggestions

The following actions are recommended but not mandated:

  • Use compostable or reusable bags rather than plastic bags.
  • If you are providing condiments with your food, dispense them in bulk with pump bottles instead of single-serving packets.
  • Avoid the use of foil, plastic wrap, and unnecessary packaging.
  • Please limit handouts. If you do have handouts, print them on post-consumer or recycled content paper.
